Research Overview
Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1978. He graduated from the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Law, Keio University, and completed his Ph.D. at the Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University, earning a Doctor of Media and Governance. He was an SDN Accredited Service Design Master (2022-2024). After serving as a Project Lecturer at the Keio University Graduate School of Media Design, an Associate at takram design engineering, an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Global and Science Studies, Yamaguchi University, and an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Design, Kyushu University, he was appointed Professor at the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Keio University, in 2026. His research interests center on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), service design, and innovation management. He actively implements new business creation by leveraging human-centered design, Service-Dominant Logic (S-D logic), and effectuation. He is the primary author of Weaving Regional Innovation. Drawing on a multidisciplinary background in psychology, sociology, philosophy, business economics, and computer science, he has engaged in diverse design research domains. After completing his doctoral dissertation on design methodologies that evoke joy and delight in users of interactive systems, he broadened his specialization from interface and interaction design to user experience (UX) design, service design, and social innovation design. His research has been accepted at leading HCI venues such as ACM SIGGRAPH and CHI. He has also showcased work and earned accolades across competitive domestic and international platforms, including SIGGRAPH Emerging Technologies (2003, 2005), the Japan Media Arts Festival (2004, 2007), the Asia Digital Art Award (2005, 2008), FILE (2007, 2008), Laval Virtual (2006, 2008), and U-35 Creators Japan (2013). Beyond academia, he translates his research findings into societal impact through entrepreneurship and consulting. During graduate school, he co-founded UTUTU Inc., followed by Sikake in 2009, designing communication media that enrich daily life through innovative technologies. In 2013, he co-founded Navigator Platform, Inc., operating digital media outlets for individual investors and business professionals. In 2014, he co-founded WANIC Co., Ltd., producing and distributing coconut wine and spirits until exiting via share transfer in 2022. Additionally, he worked with Takram—a leading design consultancy based in Tokyo and London—leading design consulting engagements focused primarily on new venture creation for major corporations. His current research topics include service design methodologies anchored in Service-Dominant Logic, value proposition frameworks utilizing discarded resources in the Global South, and service ecosystem design for space tourists.
