Seeing the World through Mathematics
Modern economics relies heavily on mathematical models and statistical methods to analyze the behavior of markets, firms, and households. Mathematics therefore provides an essential foundation for the study and advancement of economics.
At Keio University, its founder, Yukichi Fukuzawa, emphasized the importance of sūrigaku (mathematical sciences) from an early stage. He regarded mathematics as a foundation for jitsugaku (Science) and also as a discipline that cultivates logical reasoning and sound judgment. This spirit continues to shape mathematics education at Keio today. Studying mathematics is not merely about acquiring computational techniques; it is about learning how to organize complex problems, draw conclusions from evidence, and articulate ideas clearly.
The Faculty of Economics offers a broad range of mathematics courses. Students build mathematical thinking and analytical skills through subjects such as calculus, linear algebra, probability theory, and the foundations of optimization. Courses are available at multiple levels, supporting students with diverse mathematical backgrounds while also providing opportunities to pursue more advanced topics, including topology, differential equations, complex analysis, measure theory, functional analysis, and stochastic processes. These courses enable students to deepen their understanding of mathematics and broaden their intellectual horizons. In PEARL, calculus and linear algebra are offered in English.
As data science and artificial intelligence become increasingly integrated into society, mathematical thinking is becoming more important than ever. The Faculty of Economics places strong emphasis on mathematics education, both as a foundation for economics and as a tool for understanding and addressing the economic and social challenges of the modern world.
