Kentaro Oku Seminar

My seminar was newly established in 2023. Our research focus is the modern and contemporary history of Japanese politics. A distinctive feature of this seminar is that, in preparation for our presentation at the Mita Festival, we conduct interviews with individuals involved in Japanese politics and compile those records into a booklet.

Hearing the word "interview," some might wonder, "Why students?" However, I believe that interviews are a very meaningful educational tool. First, the narratives of those involved possess a sense of "presence" that leaves a strong, unforgettable impression on the listener. Furthermore, in preparation for an interview, students study that era diligently, and the strong impression they receive from the stories they hear expands their subsequent learning. However, the significance of these interviews is not limited to student learning. Even if those involved in the Japanese politics of the recent past are currently in good health, the opportunity for interviews is lost as time passes. Even if an interview is conducted by a non-expert student, as long as they have a sincere will to learn, they can capture important testimony and pass it on to future generations.

The photo shows the final scene of the editorial meeting for the Oku Seminar's first interview record, "Testimonies of Japanese Political History, Vol. 1: The Democratic Party of Japan." In this record of testimonies, we were able to include many valuable accounts from people associated with the Democratic Party of Japan. Learning about politics through books and lectures is, of course, important. In addition to that, if you are interested in hearing the "living" voices of politics, let's study Japanese political history together.
